SpaceX to build the world's largest spaceport with a $100 billion investment
SpaceX plans to build Starbase Louisiana, a new spaceport near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029.
With an investment of more than $100 billion, the project will become the largest capital investment in Louisiana's history and is expected to create over 3,000 jobs, primarily for local residents.
The new facility will be SpaceX's third U.S. launch site after Texas and Florida. Covering more than 500 km², Starbase Louisiana will feature five launch complexes with a total of 10 launch pads.
SpaceX expects the site to eventually support thousands of launches per year. Plans also include rocket refurbishment facilities, on-site propellant production, power generation, a deepwater port, an airport, and housing for employees.
According to Elon Musk, the spaceport could eventually support more than 30 Starship launches per day, making it the busiest launch facility in the world.
The Gulf Coast location provides direct access to polar and near-polar orbits, supporting future Starlink expansion and NASA's Artemis lunar missions.
SpaceX also plans to address the region's coastal erosion by working with federal agencies on shoreline protection projects. Full-scale operations are expected to begin in 2030.
